Christian Music (sort of)This is not your traditional Christian Music. You won't find these songs in your Hymnal and probably won't hear them at church, unless you attend a very progressive church. Some play on Contemporary Christian Radio, some play on secular rock stations and you may have never thought about them as "Christian". You may even find some songs here by artists who would never darken the door of a church. God works, and speaks to us, in mysterious ways. God can speak through music that we, and even those who write and perform it, would never imagine having a spiritual effect. The Spirit moves where it chooses. Many young people just will not listen to "Christian" music, simply because it is Christian. But their attitudes and thoughts are effected by the music they do listen to. Music is a powerful thing, it touches our souls in ways we can't understand. It has been a way for God to communicate with us from the beginning. Read your Psalms lately? Music speaks to us, for good or for ill, and always has. Some people look down on secular music, especially Rock-n-Roll, but it is what many of our youth listen to. Some will not even accept Contemporary Christian Music becuse it is not traditional. Music does no good if no one is listening. All of the beautiful clasical hymns are of no effect if they are not listened to. These old hymns have their place. I love to sing them, as many do, and they still touch my heart everytime. But who are we trying to reach? The people who are already in church and like singng hymns? Have you ever heard the phrase "preaching to the choir"? If we are trying to reach the lost we must go to where they are. We are not going to find them sitting in the choir loft, hopefully. They are at a rave, in a bar, at a concert, and they are not listening to "Amazing Grace". Some young Christian bands have realized this and are actively pushing their music to non-christian audiences. Some of these groups can't get play time on Christian music stations, or acceptance in churches, because of that. They are looked down on because they hang out with "Publicans and sinners". Sound familiar? Some of these groups do not claim to be Christian at all, and might even be offended by my suggestion that their music has a deeper spiritual meaning. Some of their music might even be dark and anti-christian. But as I said, God speaks through whom he chooses. They may not even be aware of the effect they might have with a particular song but God can use it for his glory and to reach some lost soul that would never be reached through traditional approaches. Some of the music here my not be appropriate for small children. Some of the lyrics might be offensive to more conservative church folk. This is what kids are listening to. I don't present the censored version of songs, just the original. But all the songs here have a deeper spiritual meaning and can speak to the heart for good. An interesting story from the Bible has the apostles complaining that some people who are not part of Jesus' followers were using his name, apparently quoting his teachings. They wanted to rebuke them, but Jesus said to leave them alone. He seemed to take the stance that if they are not against us they are with us, a very inclusive stance. The modern church, like the apostles, seem to take the other approach; if they are not with us they are against us. I choose the inclusive stance. If one of these songs can touch the heart of one lost sheep, and help them along the path back home, then they are worth while. They may not be what you want to hear at "Praise and Worhip", though some are, they have a place and God can use them. So I present on these pages some of todays biggest hits, with my personal commentary. Some are cutting edge Christian groups, some are secular "devil" groups, but each song has a positive message that can be used as the starting point for evangelism. When Paul visited the Greeks he used one of their alters, an alter to the "Unknown God", as a starting point to teaching them about Jesus. He took that from their culture, something they understood and accepted, and used it to show them Christ. He didn't scream at them to tear the idol down, he used it as a stepping stone. Some of these songs are just that. They were never intended to be "Christian" but I use them to present a Christian message. You can't reach them if they are not listening. My goal here is to get them listening. If you are someone who came for the music and are wondering what you are doing on a Christian web site, Praise God! Christian Underground Ministries is here to tell you that God is real and he is not hiding away in the churches. He is right there in the day to day. God comes to you, right where you are, because we don't have the strength to go to him. He is in the church down the street and in the bar on the corner. He is where we are because he wants to be near to us. He suffers every sorrow and thrills at every triumph whether we choose to see him or not. Step inside, enjoy the music, and listen to what God is trying to say to you. He can speak to us through sinners and saints if we are looking for him in everything we do. He is always there, always communicating with us, even when we ignore him. Open your heart and open your mind and see how the Spirit moves you. Its an awsome adventure. |
